West Bengal panchayat election results : The West Bengal panchayat election, considered a crucial test for the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, concluded with the declaration of West Bengal panchayat election results on Tuesday. The election, marred by sporadic violence and allegations of irregularities, witnessed a significant turnout of voters and a strong presence of central forces and CCTV cameras at counting centers across the state.
The West Bengal panchayat election, held in three phases, concluded recently after several days of sporadic violence and allegations of electoral malpractices. The election outcome is crucial for both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP as it serves as a litmus test before the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The panchayat elections in West Bengal are held to elect representatives for the local self-government bodies at the village, intermediate, and district levels. These elections play a vital role in shaping the political landscape of the state.
The State Election Commission (SEC) ordered repolling in 696 booths across 19 districts of Bengal due to incidents of violence and booth capturing reported during the July 8 voting. The repolling was conducted on Monday, with a substantial number of eligible voters casting their ballots.
The election process has been marred by violence, with reports of deaths, allegations of booth capturing, rigging, looting of ballot boxes, and attacks on polling officials. Such incidents have raised concerns about the safety and fairness of the electoral process.
The counting of votes commenced at 8 am on Tuesday. To ensure a secure environment, all counting centers had a significant deployment of central forces and were equipped with CCTV cameras. The presence of central forces aimed to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order during the counting process.
Various political parties have responded to the violence and alleged irregularities surrounding the panchayat elections. Senior TMC MP Sougata Roy expressed his dismay over the violence and killings, placing the responsibility on the State Election Commission (SEC).
Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wrote to the SEC, urging impartiality, free and fair counting of votes, and the safety of all candidates and agents. He further moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking compensation for victims and an independent agency’s investigation into the events.
The BJP, in response to the violence, formed a four-member fact-finding committee comprising MP and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and MP Dr. Satyapal Singh. The committee’s objective is to assess the violence-affected areas in West Bengal.
The State Election Commission, led by Rajiva Sinha, has been under scrutiny for its handling of the panchayat elections. The decision to order repolling in affected booths and the overall management of the election process has raised questions about the commission’s effectiveness and impartiality.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited South 24 Parganas district, including Bhangar and Canning, to evaluate the situation following the election violence. The governor also met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to apprise him of the recent incidents.
In the previous panchayat elections held in 2018, the Trinamool Congress won a significant number of seats uncontested. This year, similar allegations were made by the opposition, claiming that several candidates were prevented from filing nominations due to intimidation by the ruling TMC cadre.
The West Bengal panchayat election has been marred by violence and allegations of irregularities. The results of this election are crucial for both the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party as they gauge their political strength ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
