The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has declared its support for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

This support is a significant boost for the NDA government as it impacts the bill's ease of passage in the Rajya Sabha.

The BJD's leader in the Rajya Sabha, Sasmit Patra, confirmed their party's backing for the bill.

The BJD has also issued a three-line whip to its MPs in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha to support the bill.

After the YSR Congress, the BJD is the second non-aligned party to announce support for the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

The BJD and YSR Congress each have nine MPs in the Rajya Sabha, strengthening the chances of the bill's passage in the Upper House.

The ruling NDA has over 100 MPs in the Rajya Sabha, and the support of non-aligned parties ensures a majority for the bill.

Around 109 Rajya Sabha MPs from the opposition are expected to vote against the bill, including members from INDIA, BRS, and some Independents.

The GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023, seeks to redefine the powers and responsibilities of the elected government and the Lieutenant Governor in Delhi.
