In yet another alarming development, a 39-year-old man in Kerala’s Kozhikode district has been confirmed with the Nipah virus. This revelation comes after his samples turned positive during medical examination. The patient had sought treatment at a private hospital, where other individuals who tested positive for Nipah were being treated for unrelated ailments. This latest case brings the total number of Nipah cases in Kozhikode to six.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) swiftly responded to Kerala’s call for assistance in combating this deadly virus. They not only provided the necessary antibodies but also dispatched a mobile laboratory to the epicenter of the outbreak. This on-ground facility enables the state to conduct timely sample testing.
The ICMR’s National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune played a crucial role by sending its mobile Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) laboratory to Kozhikode. This laboratory was established in the district itself following the recording of five cases, including two fatalities. The facility significantly expedites the testing process.
A team of specialists from various prestigious institutions, including the National Centre for Disease Control, RML Hospital, and NIMHANS, have been stationed in Kerala. Their primary objective is to assess the situation and provide support to the state government in effectively managing the Nipah infection. Additionally, samples will be collected from bats to ascertain the virus’ presence.
In response to the escalating situation, the district administration has declared a temporary closure of educational institutions in Kozhikode. This precautionary measure, in addition to previous ones, aims to curb the spread of the virus.
State Health Minister Veena George emphasized the need for vigilance not only in Kozhikode but also in its neighboring districts — Kannur, Wayanad, and Malappuram. This collective awareness is pivotal in containing the outbreak.
As a proactive measure, approximately 11 wards in Kozhikode district have been designated as containment zones until further notice. This strategic move aims to restrict the movement of potentially infected individuals.
In the face of this renewed threat from the Nipah virus, Kerala stands united in its efforts to contain and ultimately overcome this health crisis. The collaborative actions of the ICMR, NIV, and expert teams demonstrate a resolute commitment to safeguarding public health.

The Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans. It can cause severe respiratory and neurological symptoms in infected individuals.
The primary mode of transmission is through direct contact with infected bats or their bodily fluids. Human-to-human transmission can also occur, particularly in close-knit communities.
Symptoms include fever, headache, dizziness, respiratory distress, and, in severe cases, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).
As of now, there is no licensed vaccine available for Nipah virus. Research is ongoing to develop effective preventive measures.
It is advised to avoid direct contact with bats or their habitats. Additionally, practicing good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected individuals can reduce the risk of transmission.
