Manipur Violence : The Unfolding Situation in Imphal

Manipur Violence : In recent days, Imphal, the capital city of Manipur, has witnessed escalating violence and clashes between mobs and security forces. The situation has become increasingly tense, with incidents of arson, gunfire, and attempts to loot weapons reported. This article aims to shed light on the ongoing crisis in Manipur, providing an overview of the events and underlying factors contributing to the unrest.

1. Manipur Violence : The Recent Incidents

Overnight clashes in Imphal town led to mobs attempting to torch the houses of BJP leaders. Reports indicate that two civilians were injured during the confrontations. Furthermore, automatic gunfire was heard in Kwakta and Kangvai districts throughout the night. Notably, an unsuccessful attempt was made to loot weapons from the Iringbam police station. To prevent the situation from escalating, joint marches by the Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Rapid Action Force were conducted in the state capital, aiming to halt the rioters from gathering. One mob of approximately 1,000 people attempted to burn down buildings near the palace compound.

2. Security Forces’ Response

In response to the violent clashes, security forces took action to disperse the mobs. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) employed tear gas and rubber bullets to control the crowd. Another mob, which surrounded the BJP office in Sinjemai, was dispersed by an Army column, averting any harm. Additionally, security forces managed to prevent the vandalization of the home of Sharda Devi, the BJP’s women’s wing president, in Imphal.

3. Ethnic Violence in Manipur

The clashes in Manipur are not isolated incidents but are rooted in long-standing tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities. These conflicts date back to a month ago when violent ethnic clashes erupted between the two groups. The state has witnessed approximately 100 casualties as a result of this ongoing violence. To address the situation, the government has imposed a curfew in 11 districts and implemented a ban on internet services to prevent the spread of rumors.

4. Criticism of Central Government

The Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel, criticized the central government for their handling of the crisis. Baghel highlighted the Prime Minister and Union Minister’s preoccupation with the Karnataka elections while Manipur was descending into chaos. He stated that despite the Home Minister’s visit to Manipur, the situation did not improve, and the violence continued to escalate, causing the state to burn.

5. Triggering Event: The Demand for Scheduled Tribe Status

The clashes originally erupted on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The Meiteis, comprising 53 percent of Manipur’s population and primarily residing in the Imphal Valley, have been advocating for ST status. Meanwhile, Nagas and Kukis, accounting for 40 percent of the population and residing in the hill districts, have been opposing the demand.

Conclusion

The situation in Manipur remains critical as clashes between different communities persist, leading to loss of life and property. The government’s efforts to control the situation through curfews and internet bans reflect the severity of the crisis. Urgent measures are needed to address the root causes of the conflict and promote dialogue and understanding among the communities involved.
